International® manufactures trucks and engines and IC Bus® school and commercial buses that are as tough and as smart as the people who drive them. The company creates comprehensive ownership solutions that deliver greater uptime and productivity to customers across North America. International also develops Fleetrite® aftermarket parts and offers services for dealerships in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

  1. 1831

    Cyrus McCormick invents the first successful mechanical reaper, establishing the beginning of McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, which later became part of the International Harvester Company.

  2. 1847

    Cyrus McCormick moves his business to Chicago and organizes a franchise dealership network.

  3. 1902

    McCormick Harvesting Machine Company merges with Deering Harvester Company to become International Harvester, which held 85% market share in the farm equipment business.

  4. 1904

    International Harvester builds its first commercial gasoline engine and tractor. Just five years later, the company creates the Auto Wagon, the first pickup truck.

  5. 1941

    Between 1941 and 1945, International Harvester builds rugged vehicles and a vast array of equipment to support America during WWII.

  6. 1961

    After building trucks and pickups for over 50 years, International Harvester develop the Scout, a precursor to the SUV, in 1961.

  7. 1986

    International Harvester becomes Navistar International Corporation. International® remains the brand for commercial vehicles.

  8. 1995

    With the acquisition of bus manufacturer AmTran, Navistar becomes a fully integrated producer of school buses.

  9. 2009

    The bus division acquires a new name: IC Bus® (standing for “Integrated Coach”).

  10. 2013

    The OnCommand® Connection connectivity portfolio comes onto the market.

  11. 2017

    Navistar and TRATON (still known then as Volkswagen Truck & Bus) conclude a strategic partnership.

  12. 2021

    Navistar becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of TRATON.

  13. 2022

    Launch of the first TRATON Group Modular Product for the North American market: the International® S13 Integrated Powertrain.

  14. 2024

    Back to the roots: Navistar is rebranded as International.

The long-standing history of innovation at International extends as far back as 1831, when the first precursors of the present-day company came into being.

Today, IC Bus® is the No 1 brand in school buses in North America and International® is No 2 in Class 6/7 and No 4 in Class 8 trucks.
